Tuesday Morning Minutes October 13th, 2020
Posted on 10/13/2020

Dear ALC Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to this week’s Tuesday Morning Message.  We hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing Thanksgiving weekend. A gentle reminder to all families that if you have not already done so, please return your child’s verification form to the classroom teacher by Wednesday morning.

ALC Meet the Teacher

Due to the COVID-19 protocols, we are unable to host our usual Meet the Teacher in person this fall. Instead, educators are reaching out to families this week (Tuesday, October 13 - Thursday, October 15) to share important information about the class, curriculum and general expectations by means of either a pre-recorded video or by scheduling a google meet for parents and guardians.

Daily COVID student assessment

Parents and guardians are to complete the Ottawa Public Health (OPH) COVID self-assessment for every student before leaving home each day.

This step is key to helping keep the virus out of the school.  Please take the time to thoroughly review the screening tool with your child each morning, and follow the directions provided by Ottawa Public Health.

Thank you for doing your part to help keep our staff and students safe and healthy.

Skills Ontario presentation

Did you know that the most in-demand careers in Canada are those in the Skilled Trades? Two of the top five are electricians and bakers/cooks/chefs! On Monday last week, grade 7 and 8 students had the opportunity to hear from Skills Ontario in a virtual presentation. Skills Ontario has created a unique learning opportunity called the #SkillsAtHome Challenge Series where students can participate (and win prizes!) in skilled trade and technology challenges from the safety of their home. For more information please visit http://www.skillsontario.com/skillsathome

High Performance Athletic Program feedback

The OCDSB High Performance Athletic (HPA) program supports the unique educational accommodations of students who are striving to compete at the provincial, national or international level in their respective sports. We are looking for your feedback on this program. Participation is voluntary, anonymous, and takes approximately 10 minutes. The deadline for the survey is 11:59 PM on Tuesday, October 13, 2020. For more information and link to the survey visit OCDSB’s HPA Consultation webpage

Parent Involvement Committee (PIC)

The OCDSB is looking for parents and interested community members to serve on its Parent Involvement Committee (PIC). The committee meets 6 times per year to advise on policies and issues of concern to parents, and to make suggestions to the Board regarding parent engagement that supports student achievement. The committee is comprised of parents as well as representation from the director of education, trustees, school administrators, and community members. You do not have to be a member of a school council to apply. For more details about PIC and the responsibility of members, please visit our website.

Applications will be accepted until Friday, October 30, 2020.

ALC Terry Fox School Run and 40 Challenge

Our Terry Fox fundraising campaign continues. Classes are using some of their DPA and P.E. periods to run laps to build kilometres together as a school and follow Terry on his Marathon of Hope.  We have successfully arrived in Dartmouth, NS and are heading to Charlottetown, PEI this week. A distance of 355 km.

Our second activity is doing the 40 Challenge.  This is the 40th anniversary of the Terry Fox Run so the foundation launched a challenge to individual students and/or classes to create and demonstrate an activity that can be repeated 40 times.  Below is a link which provides further information.  Your child can participate at home and take a picture of the activity and email it to janet.evans@ocdsb.ca.  We have a mobile Terry Fox bulletin board which tracks our school's progress on one side and has pictures of students taking the 40 Challenge on the other.  Here is a link for more information.

Last year our school raised $4,227.20!!!  We can do it again!   http://www.terryfox.ca/ALorneCassidyESStittsville. Students can even get involved too by creating their own fundraising page under their school name: https://terryfox.org/schoolrun/students/. Thank you for supporting our school in the fight against cancer and continuing Terry’s legacy! #terryfoxschoolrun @terryfoxfoundation
