Monday Morning Minutes September 28th, 2020
Posted on 09/28/2020

Dear ALC Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to this week’s Monday Morning Message.

Please Ensure your Child Dresses for the weather

Unfortunately, the forecast is for rain this week.  Please ensure that your child comes to school dressed for the weather as we will be outside in the rain for gym and recess unless it is an absolute downpour.  Students that are wearing rainboots are welcome to bring a pair of indoor shoes to change into for the day but as per the COVID protocols, must take the shoes home with them at the end of the day.

Daily COVID student assessment, illness at school and Cohorting

Parents and guardians are required to complete the COVID self assessment for every student before leaving home each day.

https://secureforms.ottawapublichealth.ca/School-Health-Sante-scolaire/COVID-19-Screening-Tool-for-Students

This step is key to helping keep the virus out of the school.  Please take the time to thoroughly review the screening tool with your child each morning, and if they are exhibiting any symptoms, keep them home.

If your child becomes ill at school with possible COVID symptoms, they will be taken to the isolation room and you will be called to pick up your child, and if applicable, any siblings who also attend ALC. Your child may return to school once they have received a negative COVID test result and they have been 24 hours symptom free, or your household may choose to self-isolate for 14 days.  Negative test results need to be communicated to either Mrs Walker or Mrs Norton in the main office. Siblings may return to school as soon as the child in question has the negative test result and they themselves are not exhibiting any symptoms - they do not need to wait for their sibling to be symptom free.  We realize that picking up your child during the school day is inconvenient and that the lines for COVID tests are quite long, but we thank you for your continued cooperation as the health and safety of all ALC staff and students is our first priority.

Important Reminder re Student Absences

All student absences need to be reported to the main office.  Please call our absence number at 613-831-3434 and press 1 for the absence line or send an email to alcabsence@ocdsb.ca.  Please be sure to include your child’s first and last name, their homeroom teacher’s name and grade, and the reason for their absence.

Verification Forms

A hard copy Student Registration Verification Forms should have come home with your child last week.  We ask that you verify all of the data on the form, mark any needed updates or corrections and sign and date the last page before sending it back to school with your child.

Terry Fox

A. Lorne Cassidy Elementary School is proud to take part in this year’s 40th Anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope. Students are walking and running during Phys Ed class and adding to our collective mileage tally.  Our goal is to run the equivalent number of km that it takes to cross Canada from East to West!  Please help show your support by donating to: http://www.terryfox.ca/ALorneCassidyESStittsville. Students can even get involved too by creating their own fundraising page under their school name: https://terryfox.org/schoolrun/students/. Thank you for your supporting our school in the fight against cancer and continuing Terry’s legacy! #terryfoxschoolrun @terryfoxfoundation

FUNDRAISING DATES- Thursday, October 1 to Thursday, October 15

Online Media Info forms

All parents/guardians are required to complete the Acceptable Use of Technology forms for your ALC child(ren) before a student may use technology at school.   One form needs to be completed per child.

https://forms.ocdsb.ca/Forms/Use-of-Technology

Please complete the form as soon as possible so that your child can access technology, including SEA chromebooks, at school.

We would also ask that you complete a second link to indicate your permission, or lack thereof, to include your child’s work, photos and videos on various communication platforms.  The Medial School website permission form can be found here:

https://forms.ocdsb.ca/Forms/Media-School-Website-Consent-Form

Parents requiring a hard copy of either the Appropriate Use of Tech or Media Permission form are asked to please contact Mrs Norton in the office.

Last year’s Items for pick up

If your child attended ALC last year but is not with us In-Person this term, and you were unable to pick up their personal items back in June,  please contact Mrs Walker asap at tina.walker@ocdsb.ca and we will arrange for a curbside pickup.

Individual Education Plans (IEPs)

At this time staff are reviewing all existing Individual Education Plans and are starting to update them as needed. Initial Individual Education Plans (IEPs) are now also being created for specific students. We value parent input into this process and will be sending home consultation forms to be completed by parents soon. These will be sent via email, so if the email the school currently has on file is not current we ask that you kindly contact the office as soon as possible to update it as we plan to send the forms out later this week. Please return the consultation forms to your child's homeroom teacher so that he/she can include your input in the IEP. All IEPs will be sent home October 26, 2020.

Orange Shirt Day and Rowan’s Law Day - Wednesday, September 30th

Two important events are both taking place this Wednesday, September 30th - Orange Shirt Day and Rowan's Law DayOrange Shirt Day is a day to educate our students and communities on the history and legacy of the Indian Residential School system. It is a day of remembrance that will foster commitment to building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect for First Nation, Inuit and Métis students, their families, and communities each and every day. Rowan's Law Day, the last Wednesday of each September, has been legislated as a day to raise awareness about concussion safety.  Rowan’s Law was named for Rowan Stringer, a student at John McCrae Secondary School, who died in the spring of 2013.  Rowan's Law Day raises awareness about concussions and concussion safety. It is unusual that both important days fall on the same date this year. The acknowledgement, awareness, and commitment to learn about these important topics, will provide a greater understanding and hope for our students each day of the year.
