Monday Morning Minutes September 21st, 2020
Posted on 09/21/2020

Dear ALC Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to this week’s Monday Morning Message.

Daily COVID student assessment, illness at school and Cohorting

Parents and guardians are required to complete the COVID self assessment for every student before leaving home each day.

https://secureforms.ottawapublichealth.ca/School-Health-Sante-scolaire/COVID-19-Screening-Tool-for-Students

This step is key to helping keep the virus out of the school.  Please take the time to thoroughly review the screening tool with your child each morning, and if they are exhibiting any symptoms, keep them home.

If your child becomes ill at school with possible COVID symptoms, they will be taken to the isolation room and you will be called to pick up your child, and if applicable, any siblings who also attend ALC. Your child may return to school once they have received a negative COVID test result and they have been 24 hours symptom free, or your household may choose to self-isolate for 14 days.  Negative test results need to be communicated to either Mrs Walker or Mrs Norton in the main office. Siblings may return to school as soon as the child in question has the negative test result and they themselves are not exhibiting any symptoms - they do not need to wait for their sibling to be symptom free.  We realize that picking up your child during the school day is inconvenient and that the lines for COVID tests are quite long, but we thank you for your continued cooperation as the health and safety of all ALC staff and students is our first priority.

In the event that we need to move from an in-person to a hybrid teaching model at some point during the school year, we have been asked to divide all classes into two cohorts.  You will be receiving information regarding your child’s cohort (A or B) in a separate email this week.  If you have more than one child at ALC and they do not appear in the same cohort, please contact Mrs Norton at wendy.norton@ocdsb.ca asap.

Important Reminder re Student Absences

All student absences need to be reported to the main office.  Please call our absence number at 613-831-3434 and press 1 for the absence line or send an email to alcabsence@ocdsb.ca.  Please be sure to include your child’s first and last name, their homeroom teacher’s name and grade, and the reason for their absence.

Allergies and other Important Medical Information

We have a variety of life-threatening allergies amongst our student and staff and kindly ask your cooperation in ensuring the safety of all.  If your child has a life-threatening allergy and you have not yet done so, please contact the school office ASAP and ensure that all of the necessary paperwork and the necessary medications are provided to the office.  Once we are made aware of such allergies, families are sent a letter from the office detailing allergies specific to the class.

As ALC is a nut-aware building as we have many students with life-threatening allergies to both peanuts and tree nuts; we respectfully ask that no nut products be brought into the building.  The online links for the medical paperwork were provided in last week’s MMM.

Dogs at student drop-off /pick-up

Please understand that even the friendliest dog may frighten a young child.  We respectfully ask that you either leave their 4 legged family members at home or stand with your leashed dog further away from the student release areas during drop off and pick up.  Thank you for helping to ensure the safety of our students.

Borrowed Chromebooks

A gentle reminder to ALC families who borrowed chromebooks during the spring school closure period to please send the devices and charger cord, in a bag labelled with your last name, back to school asap. We would like to put them back into circulation for in person student use.

Online Media Info forms

All parents/guardians are required to complete the Acceptable Use of Technology forms for your ALC child(ren) before a student may use technology at school.   One form needs to be completed per child.

https://forms.ocdsb.ca/Forms/Use-of-Technology

Please complete the form as soon as possible so that your child can access technology, including SEA chromebooks, at school.   Parents requiring a hard copy are asked to please contact Mrs Norton in the office.

Orange Shirt Day and Rowan’s Law Day - Wednesday, September 30th

Two important events that are both taking place on Wednesday, September 30th - Orange Shirt Day and Rowan's Law DayOrange Shirt Day is a day to educate our students and communities on the history and legacy of the Indian Residential School system. It is a day of remembrance that will foster commitment to building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect for First Nation, Inuit and Métis students, their families, and communities each and every day. Rowan's Law Day, the last Wednesday of each September, has been legislated as a day to raise awareness about concussion safety.  Rowan’s Law was named for Rowan Stringer, a student at John McCrae Secondary School, who died in the spring of 2013.  Rowan's Law Day raises awareness about concussions and concussion safety. It is unusual that both important days fall on the same date this year. The acknowledgement, awareness, and commitment to learn about these important topics, will provide a greater understanding and hope for our students each day of the year.

Upcoming School Council meeting

ALC School Council is pleased to announce that our first council meeting will take place on Wednesday September 30th, 2020 at 7 pm virtually via Google Meets.
