Monday Morning Minutes October 5th, 2020
Posted on 10/05/2020

Dear ALC Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to this week’s Monday Morning Message.

Thank you to all ALC parents and guardians who are encouraging your children to wear their masks and to social distance.  We would respectfully ask that all adults model social distancing and mask wearing for our student community, especially near the Grade 1-3 drop off/pick up zone.  As the number of cases remains high in Ottawa, we want to make sure that we are doing all we can to keep our ALC community healthy.

Please Ensure your Child Dresses for the weather

Unfortunately, this week’s forecast again includes rain.  Please ensure that your child comes to school dressed for the weather as we will be outside in the rain for gym and recess unless it is an absolute downpour.  Students who are wearing rainboots are welcome to bring a pair of indoor shoes to change into for the day but as per the COVID protocols, must take the shoes home with them at the end of the day.

Daily COVID student assessment

Parents and guardians are to complete the Ottawa Public Health (OPGH) COVID self assessment for every student before leaving home each day.

This step is key to helping keep the virus out of the school.  Please take the time to thoroughly review the screening tool with your child each morning, and if they are exhibiting any symptoms, keep them home.

For those families waiting for COVID test results, this link may be helpful in shortening the wait - our understanding is that results are posted here as soon as they are available

The COVID situation in Ottawa is ever changing and we will update you with any changes to the protocols as soon as we receive them.

ALC Terry Fox School Run and 40 Challenge

The grade 5/6 MFI class launched our Terry Fox fundraising campaign on Friday.  We have two main activities this year.  Classes are using some of their DPA and P.E. periods to run laps to build kilometres together as a school and follow Terry on his Marathon of Hope.  We have successfully crossed Newfoundland and are making our way to Sheet Harbour, NS.  Here is a journal entry from Terry Fox when he arrived in Sheet Harbour, Nova Scotia on May 15 after running 1,278 km.

After a reception where Terry ran with some school children, he wrote: “When I ran with the kids I really burned it just to show them how fast I could go. They were tired and puffing. All right!”

Our second activity is doing the 40 Challenge.  This is the 40th anniversary of the Terry Fox Run so the foundation launched a challenge to individual students and/or classes to create and demonstrate an activity that can be repeated 40 times.  Below is a link which provides further information.  Your child can participate at home and take a picture of the activity and email it to  We have a mobile Terry Fox bulletin board which tracks our school's progress on one side and has pictures of students taking the 40 Challenge on the other.  Here is a link for more information.

Fundraising campaign from October 2- October 16.  Last year our school raised $4,227.20!!!  We can do it again! Students can even get involved too by creating their own fundraising page under their school name: Thank you for supporting our school in the fight against cancer and continuing Terry’s legacy! #terryfoxschoolrun @terryfoxfoundation

A reminder to parents of students with IEPs. Parent Consultation forms were sent home by email last week. To provide your input you can simply email answers to the questions to your child’s teacher, print and complete the form and send in a hard copy or scan and send it back by email to your child’s teacher. Student Accident Insurance

Creating a caring and safe environment for our students is our top priority.  Unfortunately, despite all reasonable precautions being taken, accidents can still happen.  Some injuries may result in medical, dental or other expenses that are not covered by provincial health care or employer group plans. As a parent/guardian, you become responsible for these expenses. Student accident insurance is available for purchase, on a voluntary basis, through Reliable Life Insurance Company.  Parents may apply online at or forms may be downloaded at

The OCDSB encourages all parents/guardians to consider purchasing this insurance.  The accident insurance coverage options range from $17.00/year to $33.00/year.  This coverage is for the entire calendar year and also applies to accidents that occur outside of school hours.  If you have any questions, please call Binks Insurance Brokers directly at 613-222-1350.
