Monday Morning Minutes June 21st, 2021
Posted on 06/21/2021

Dear ALC Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the last Monday Morning Message of the 2020-21 school year. We hope you enjoyed the weekend and that this email finds you and your family doing well.

As we wrap up the most unique school year that we have ever experienced in our teaching careers, we wanted to take a moment to thank you, on behalf of the entire ALC team, for your support of your children and our staff.  We are so very proud of your children; they have shown determination and resiliency as they pivoted multiple times between in-person and online learning, and followed COVID protocols while continuing to work hard and try their best, and remaining kind and caring friends.  We wish the entire ALC community a safe and relaxing summer.

As my tenure as Principal of A Lorne Cassidy comes to a close at the end of the month, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks for an incredible 5 years at ALC.  A special thank you to School Council for your continued support of not only our ALC students and staff, but also of our sister school community, Carleton Heights. It has been a privilege to be part of the ALC community and as I move on to Goulbourn Middle School this fall, I take with me fond memories of my time here.  I look forward to running into any and all ALC ducks in the near and distant future!

Congratulations and best wishes to our retirees!

As this most unusual school year comes to a close, we would like to take a moment to acknowledge several of our staff who will be retiring at the end of the month.  We would like to extend our best wishes as we congratulate Mr. Faulkner, Mrs. Lutz, Mrs. McPherson, Mme Morneau, Mme Thomas and Mr. Trotman on their retirement.   We thank them for their many years of dedication and commitment to our ALC students, public education and the ALC community and we wish them well as they head off to new adventures. Congratulations and best wishes!

Term 2 Report cards will be sent to parents and guardians via email

ALC parents and guardians will be receiving their child’s Term 2 report card directly in their email later this week. Late in the afternoon on Wednesday, June 23rd, parents and guardians, who have provided their email addresses to the school, will receive an email that contains the link to download the secure PDF report card. Parents and guardians will need to enter their child’s Ontario Education Number (OEN) to access the report card. When entering the OEN, please include the hyphens (dashes). The format should be XXX-XXX-XXX. The OEN can be found on any previous provincial report cards. You can use the OCDSB Report Card Portal to access your child’s previous report cards and find the OEN.

Student Item Pickup and Return of Borrowed Tech Reminder

A reminder to all families that June 24th and June 25th have been designated as asynchronous learning days for all elementary students to allow for the return of any borrowed learning materials and equipment, including Chromebooks and mobile hotspots, and the retrieval of personal belongings left at school prior to the April break, as well as medications such as epipens, inhalers, etc that were housed in the main office The details are as follows:

Thursday, June 24th

Kinder to Gr 7 families with the last name starting with A through KOCH are welcome between 9 am and 11:30 am.

Kinder to Gr 7 families with the last name starting with KOE through Z are welcome between 1 pm and 3:30 pm.

Friday, June 25th

All In-Person and OCV, ALC Gr 8 students are invited into the building between 9:15 and 11:15 am to collect their personal items, receive their certificate, have a small photo op (at the front of the school weather permitting or in the front rotunda if the weather does not cooperate) and say goodbye to the staff.

Please note that any ALC families with both a grade 8 child and younger siblings at ALC who may prefer to make only one trip are welcome to retrieve all of their children's personal items during the Friday morning Gr 8 timeslot.

On both days, building access will be through the front doors of the school on a first-come-first-served basis.

All ALC students and/or parents entering the building are required to follow COVID protocols including:

- signing in and out of the building,

- sanitizing your hands upon entry,

- confirming everyone entering the building has completed the OPH COVID screening

- wearing their mask and social distancing at all times while on school property

All families will be required to exit the building via the primary doorway or the intermediate doorway onto the back paved area to sign out.

Homeroom teachers will be in their classrooms allowing the students a quick visit and opportunity to wish everyone a safe summer when they come to retrieve their items.  Classroom access will be limited to a maximum of 3 families at a time. Any additional students/families are welcome to line up, socially distanced of course, in the hallway, while they await room access.

Parents of Kindergarten students are welcome to avoid entering the building altogether and should make their way directly to the Kindergarten yard and knock on the Kinder A/B or C class door in the Kinder yard.  Kinder staff will then retrieve your child's items and place them on a small table just outside the door for you.

For any families simply dropping off tech, library books or other borrowed materials, a drop-off table will be set up at the front of the school for returned devices.  OCV students are also asked to return their borrowed devices as well on Thursday, June 24th.  Students who are enrolled in summer school and currently have a borrowed device and/or hotspot may keep the device for the duration of summer school.  Medications may also be collected at the front door.

The Grade 8 Leaving Ceremony video will be sent out to the families on Thursday, June 24th.
