Monday Morning Minutes January 18th, 2021
Posted on 01/18/2021

Dear ALC Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to this week’s Monday Morning Message.

Update on Remote Learning and our Return to In-Person Learning

The current province-wide shut-down is challenging for everyone. It is also our best hope for ensuring that students and staff can return to school safely and as quickly as possible.  Please stay home and follow the public health guidelines.  It is important that we continue to monitor ourselves and our children for symptoms of COVID-19, even while school is remote.  If you or your child has COVID-19 symptoms, or has been exposed to someone with COVID-19, please have them tested. There are many appointments available at the testing and assessment centers. If anyone in the home has symptoms of COVID-19, everyone must stay home while waiting for COVID-19 test results. Visit the OPH testing page for additional information on where to get tested in Ottawa. See also the COVID-19 screening tool for school and child care

By Wednesday, January 20, the Ontario Chief Medical Officer of Health will advise on which public health units will return to in-person learning; an update will be emailed to OCDSB families shortly after the announcement.  When we return to in-person learning, the following new health and safety measures will be put in place in all Ontario elementary and secondary schools:

  • students in Grades 1 to 12 must wear masks or face coverings:

    • in schools, including in hallways and during classes

    • on school transportation

    • outdoors during recess, where distance cannot be maintained.

On behalf of the entire staff, we would like to thank ALC parents and guardians for all of your support in making online learning a success.  Understanding the bandwidth challenges experienced by some, we would greatly appreciate it if you could please encourage your child to keep their camera on during their google meet sessions as our educators rely on facial expressions and body language cues to check for understanding when the students are muted.

Virtual After School Literacy/Numeracy Homework Help for Grades 7 and 8

The Continuing Education Department is offering free after school Literacy and Numeracy support programs for OCDSB students in grades 7-12. This program provides students with a supervised opportunity to complete, review, practice and organize their work in order to help them achieve greater success at school.  Please see the attached flyer for more information.

Kinder Info night

Will your child be 4 years old by December 31, 2021? If so, we’re ready to help your child explore and discover as they begin Kindergarten in September of 2021.

On Monday, January 25, 2021 at 7 p.m. we will be holding a virtual parent information session, where you will learn about our Kindergarten program, meet our school administrators, and hear some useful tips to ease your concerns and help your child prepare for their learning adventure.  Please help us spread the word to friends and neighbours with young children.

Registration is now open for Kindergarten 2021. It’s easy to register. Visit the OCDSB Registration page to register online anytime.
