It seems that Mother Nature has it in for Fridays this year as we are looking at another snowy Friday here in Ottawa! Just a reminder that tomorrow is a PA Day and there is no school for students.

The students in EF2/3 created a Kindness Quilt. It is a beautiful collaboration and they are all so excited to share the meaning behind it. We wanted to share it with you, as we really do need more kindness in the world and this group of learners understand that!

FOOTWEAR: As we now have snow (and ice and slush) on the ground, we really do require students of all ages to bring shoes to wear indoors. Not only do the students need indoor running shoes for PE classes, the puddles create a mess in our classrooms, and they pose a significant risk of slipping. We appreciate the support with this.

RIDEAUWOOD PRESENTATIONS: A Rideauwood counsellor is making the way through 7-8 classes. Grade 7 topic-Tech addiction, Grade 8-Substance use

COURSE SELECTION FOR HIGH SCHOOL: This week Mrs. Eady is starting her work with Grade 8 students introducing them to Xello. Xello is the program used to help students learn about different careers and select their courses for Grade 9. Course selection will be completed by the first week of March. More information to come. Please contact Jodi Eady ([email protected]) with questions or concerns.

SOUTH CARLETON INFORMATION NIGHT: On February 9 at 6:30 p.m., we will host an in-person information night where parents and students can learn about the exciting pathways available in high school, ask questions, and interact with staff at our school. CELEBRATIONS IN OUR COMMUNITY

LUNAR NEW YEAR: The Lunar New Year begins January 22nd and is observed and celebrated in various ways  in Asian cultures.

What is the Lunar New Year?

The festival's date is determined by the Lunar Calendar which changes every year, but it always falls anytime between January 21 to February 20. The Lunar New Year follows a different calendar based on the twelve phases of the moon.  This Lunar Year is known as the Year of the Rabbit.

TAMIL HERITAGE MONTH: January has been designated at Tamil Heritage Month by the Canadian Government. “It is a time to recognize and celebrate the many contributions Canadians of Tamil descent have made to Canada, as well as their extraordinary language and culture.

Canada is the proud home of one of the world’s largest Tamil diasporas. Tamil Canadians have enriched, and continue to enrich, our national fabric through their many achievements in business, politics, and sports, to name a few areas. This month provides us an opportunity to show our appreciation for their invaluable contributions in building an even stronger and consciously more inclusive Canada.”

There are many Famous Tamil-Canadians including the former NDP MP Rathika Sitsabaiesan who was the first Tamil elected to Parliament in 2011. Other notable Tamil-Canadians include author Shyam Selvadurai as well as athletes, actors and directors such as Lenin M. Sivam, director of 1999.
