COVID-19 UPDATE: As you are aware, we have had our first experience with a positive COVID-19 case this past week. We know that this can be stressful and worrisome for many. This week we have been continuing to review and reinforce the importance of following the protocols we have in place at school.

We are asking parents to continue to complete the daily screening before coming to school each day. If your child(ren) is/are experiencing any symptoms to please keep them home. We understand that this is not convenient and impacts families, but it is very important in our efforts to keep illnesses out of the school. For all of our students, it will continue to be very important to ensure students wear masks when with others, and maintain their distance.

CUBBIES and LOCKERS- The District has allowed us to use cubbies, hooks and lockers if we are able to ensure adequate social distancing in our hallways. We have been able to arrange for students to have access to lockers and cubbies to store their OUTDOOR wear only. Access to lockers will only be made available upon entry and exit of the building. Students will not be able to go to their lockers in between or during class time.

OUTDOOR CLOTHING- As the weather continues to change, we would like to remind students that they are to dress warmly for the weather. We appreciate all our families’ support in sending their children to school dressed properly and prepared to be outside to enjoy the fresh air and active play. Living in the Ottawa area, we are accustomed to a variety of weather patterns, but that doesn’t often stop us from enjoying the outdoors! We keep a close eye on the forecast, and when necessary, we have indoor recesses when the weather is inclement, such as steady rain, excessive wind, temperatures or wind chills that fall below -25 degrees Celsius.

As well, Outdoor Phys. Ed and DPA classes will be held throughout the winter months. Please ensure that your child comes to school properly dressed. This includes jackets, boots, hats and mitts ~ students may be outside up to 40 minutes at a time so please dress for the weather!

Families might also want to consider putting a change of socks and pants in school bags as well. With the wet weather, students might appreciate a change of clothes should they get wet outside. Extra masks might also be appreciated as we are seeing more and more wet masks!

INCLEMENT WEATHER — SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION CANCELLATION- On mornings when weather and road conditions make transportation unsafe, please listen to local radio stations for transportation cancellations or school closures. Information is also posted to the:

  • OCDSB website [www.ocdsb.ca]

  • Ottawa StudentTransportation Authority's website [www.ottawaschoolbus.ca]

  • OSTA Twitter page [@OttSchoolBus]

  • OCDSB Facebook page

  • OCDSB Twitter page

  • ALC Twitter page [@ALorneCassidy]

  • ALC Facebook page

The safety of students is always the first consideration when the Ottawa Student Transportation Authority (OSTA) makes the decision to cancel transportation services. Please note that when school buses are cancelled this applies to the whole day, although schools remain open for students. Parents who choose to drive their children to school must also pick them up by 3:45 PM, the regular dismissal time.

Our EDP program continues to operate on Inclement Days.

In terms of contacting the Safe Arrival line, students who normally take the bus will be automatically marked as absent.  No phone call is expected or necessary.  Parents of walkers should contact the office to report their child’s absence if they are to remain at home for the day.  Please call 831-3434 press "1",  or email us at alcabsence@ocdsb.ca.

POPPY DONATIONS: Thank you to those who made donations to the Poppy Fund for Remembrance Day. Our school community sent a cheque for $347.00 to the Legion.

JoJo’s Pizza NIght: Jojo's kick back nights are back again this year! The last Wednesday of each month when you order from Jojo's in Stittsville just mention ALC and School Council gets 25% back. Mention it on the phone or put it in the comment box on an online order.  Starting next week Nov 24th, all day long.

On Thursday. ALC School Council announced that our Fundscript Gift Card Fundraiser is back! We will also once again be collecting gift cards to donate to Carleton Heights Elementary School. There are several great gift cards available for purchase on the site! Great time to get some holiday gifts purchased! This fundraiser will run from November 22nd to December 1st. This will allow enough time to collect and distribute to Carleton Heights. Every order placed also sees a donation made to our School Council and this year we are raising funds for new technology and books for classrooms. We thank you for the support!

THE THIRD PATH- When educators need to make withdrawals from the emotional bank account it needs to be for good reason. We don’t make them casually.

It is important for us all to remember that when withdrawing from the account, deposits then need to be made to replenish it.

Protecting against relationship overdraft means ensuring that when withdrawals are made, they are the smallest ones necessary.

WORLD CHILDREN’S DAY AND NATIONAL CHILD DAY-  November 20th is both World Children’s Day and National Child Day in Canada. It is our official day to recognize Canada’s responsibilities to children and youth in fulfilment of their human rights, on the anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Canada's ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. On this day in 1959, the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child.

November 20th and every day, we have the responsibility and honour to recognize, elevate, and uphold the rights of all students in the OCDSB acknowledging the unique sovereign rights of First Nations, Inuit and Métis children.

BULLYING AWARENESS AND PREVENTION WEEK- Across Ontario, the week of November 21-27 is Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week to help promote safer schools and a positive learning environment. During this week of awareness, students, school staff and parents are encouraged to learn more about bullying and its effect on student learning and well-being.
