YARD CONDITIONS: This week mother nature has left her mark in the form of a chunky icy mess on our field. We have had to adjust our thinking about outdoor time, as we cannot safely get all of our classes out at recess time, while still keeping them cohorted. On Thursday and Friday, classes were able to get outside for 2 x 20 minute blocks of time throughout the school day for fresh air and some movement. Although this is not ideal, it is better than being inside all day. We are working with our Facilities team to see if there are any potential solutions to make the field accessible for us.
We realize that being inside is frustrating for everyone, but at the end of the day, we have to make our decisions based on what is safest for our students, and at the moment, our field is not safe for students to be playing and running on. While we would love to send them out for recess, we know that they will not be able to reasonably stand and only walk while out there. At the end of the day, we want everyone going home without any injuries we could have reasonably prevented. One more good snow fall, and we should be able to get our field back!
SCREENING TOOL HEADS UP- Upon returning to school in January 2022, schools and school boards have been directed to once again implement daily on-site confirmation of self-screening for all students. It is a requirement that all elementary students learning in person confirm or have a parent/guardian confirm each day that they have completed COVID-19 screening prior to, or upon arrival at school.
Beginning January 3rd, elementary students and/or parents/guardians are required to confirm they have conducted a COVID-19 screening each day to determine if they should attend school. We will use the same processes we used in September.
- Kindergarten: Students will be given a small card attached to their backpacks. Parents are asked to initial by the correct date that they have completed the screening.
- Grade 1-3: a page will be added to the front of the agenda. Parents are asked to initial by the correct date that they have completed the screening.
- Grades 4-8: Teachers will run through the screener each morning as they take attendance.
Rapid Test Kits: All students will be coming home with 5 rapid test kits on the last day of school before the break. This is a Ministry Initiative and all instructions will be provided for how to use the kits.
VACCINE CLINIC AT ALC: OPH is holding a drop in vaccine clinic at ALC after school hours on December 17th. The clinic is for children between 5-11, and children must be accompanied by an adult. Please see the attached flyer for details about all of the drop in clinics through the city in December. The clinic at ALC begins at ALC at 4:15 and will end at 7:00.
THE THIRD PATH - CONDITION #4- THE POWER OF POSITIVITY - The power of positivity at school involves emphasizing the strengths of students in order to help address their needs. Educators often have to identify the needs of students and the problems that may arise when those needs are not met. Intentionally using positive thinking to frame these areas of need prioritizes an asset-based philosophy versus one that naturally arises when we identify gaps in learning. Thinking positively about our problems is certainly a super power!
JoJo’s Pizza NIght: Jojo's kick back nights are back again this year! The last Wednesday of each month when you order from Jojo's in Stittsville just mention ALC and School Council gets 25% back. Mention it on the phone or put it in the comment box on an online order. Starting next week Dec 29th, all day long.
STUDENT EARLY PICK UP- Just a reminder that it is very helpful for the team in the office if you are able to give us advance notice of any pick ups that are happening throughout the school day (alcabsence@ocdsb.ca). We realize that sometimes it is unavoidable, but if you are able to avoid the 3:30-3:45 end of day pick up time, that would be most helpful for us in the office.
INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL- We would like to remind families planning for international travel about the current federal protocols that exist for travelers. Please note, international travel rules are subject to change. The OCDSB is unable to provide specific guidance for families considering international travel, and any additional questions should be directed to Ottawa Public Health or federal authorities.
