Fabulous Friday September 17th, 2021
Posted on 09/17/2021

We have made it through our first full week!!

As we walk throughout the building, it is lovely seeing the classes busy and engaged in in-person learning.  We have missed “The Noise of School”. If you have a chance, click on this YouTube video of the same name.  It is a lovely representation of how it feels!

A few reminders:

  • When dropping off/picking up students, please do not crowd the gates. We realize it is a busy spot, but if parents can stand back from the gate, it will make it easier for students to get through.

  • We also ask that if you are bringing your furry family members at pick up and drop off that you step back from the path and the gate to make space for others to easily get through. Some students are quite intimidated by the animals, making their entry and exit more stressful.

MEET THE TEACHER: This year ALC staff will once again be hosting Virtual Meet the Teacher Events. In an effort to reduce potential time conflicts, we have given each division a specific night to host their event. Each teacher will share their specific details about their meetings with the families of children they work with. We look forward to “meeting” our families!

To provide service to the families currently assigned to the cancelled A. Lorne Cassidy School Route V65, OSTA has revised Route V27 and V108.  New Route assignments will be available on the Parent Portal this weekend and will take effect on Wednesday, September 22, 2021.  Some students will be reassigned to van service and calls will be made directly to those families.

This week we were assigned a new Kindergarten Class, so we are working to get that class up and running ASAP.

IMMUNIZATION CLINIC: OPH recognizes that some students were not able to be immunized because of the timing of the clinic and their COVID vaccines. OPH will be arranging alternative ways for students to get their immunizations, and information about that will be shared when we receive it.

TERRY FOX RUN: Mme. Evans and her class are busy working on a plan for all of our Ducks to safely participate in the Terry Fox Run this year! There will be a Virtual Assembly introducing the plans for this year to students. Donations this year are going to be online again. You can donate here: ALC Fundraising page for the Terry Fox Run

Orange Shirt Day and Indigenous Education: At ALC we are committed to unlearning and relearning to work towards Truth and Reconciliation. As we look towards Orange Shirt Day, each class has started the work to develop a class Land Acknowledgement. Our hope is that through this work, we not only learn more about the Indigenous People of Canada, but we come to develop the same sense of connection and value to our land that exists within Indigenous Cultures across Turtle Island. As classes create their land acknowledgements, we will use those during our morning announcements each day. We are also asking classes to post their learning and work on the front bulletin board in the Rotunda. Although we cannot have guests in the school to share our work, we will post photos to social media as our collection of learning grows.

THE THIRD PATH- CONDITION #1: SAFETY-  Exploration and learning can occur only within the context of safe and secure relationships. Students who have not consistently received safe and secure caregiving will struggle to learn at school. They have developed beliefs and behaviours that undermine their own success and they assume in advance that adults will let them down. Change is slow, but educators can make a big difference when they start to see the patterns of behaviour that their students engage in and recognize the underlying unmet emotional needs that are being expressed. (p. 32 – The Third Path)

“If children feel safe, they can take risks, ask questions, make mistakes, learn to trust, share their feelings, and grow.”   Alfie Kohn

In 2018, the Ontario Legislature passed legislation designating the last Wednesday of each September as Rowan’s Law Day. The day is dedicated to promoting awareness of strategies to prevent, identify, and manage concussions. Rowan Stringer was an OCDSB student. The OCDSB is committed to honoring her memory by ensuring that students in the District have an opportunity to learn about concussions so that they can keep themselves and others safe.

A reminder that all students must have the following electronic forms completed. If you need a hard copy, please reach out to Mrs. Norton at wendy.norton@ocdsb.ca
