Fabulous Friday September 10th, 2021
Posted on 09/10/2021

We have our first 2 days successfully in the books! Our transition back to school after 4 plus months away went very smoothly, all things considered! Having said that, I think we are all looking forward to the weekend, especially since the weather is supposed to be just lovely!

In this week’s Friday Message:

  • A few reminders

  • Welcome Back Assembly

  • The Third Path

  • Terry Fox Run

  • Orange Shirt Day

  • Rowan’s Law

  • Immunizations

  • Electronic Forms

A FEW REMINDERS: Yard Supervision begins at 9:00 a.m.  Students may not access the yard until after that time. As students are not permitted to play or socialize before school begins, we are encouraging our students to arrive at school closer to 9:15 a.m.

We continue to adjust our dismissal plan to make it as safe for all of our Ducks as possible. We greatly appreciate your patience as we navigate this complicated time of our day! Please know that while we work through this, we will be flexible in supporting families with dismissal and younger students will always be supervised until parents arrive.

WELCOME BACK ASSEMBLY- Today,  Mrs Hutt and Ms Trish hosted a virtual assembly where we introduced our staff (via photograph) sans mask. We also shared an interactive read aloud called We Are Water Protectors by Carole Linstrom. It is a beautiful exploration of the values, connections and wisdom of Indigenous people as it relates to water and Mother Earth. It was inspired by the many Indigenous led movements in North America to protect water as a sacred source of and for life.

THE THIRD PATH- This year, ALC formally walks The Third Path - where academics and well-being are the unified pathway for our students and staff. The Third Path is a relationship-based approach that will play a critical role in our School Learning Plan and our school community.

There are eight conditions for achievement and well-being that support human development. The first condition outlined in The Third Path – Safety – is so critical when establishing a relationship-based approach to learning. The authors (Dr David Tranter, Lori Carson, Tom Boland) refer to the ‘feeling of being safe’ as the most basic condition that needs to be met in order for students to be able to engage in learning.

The following video clip is a brief introduction to The Third Path. As we welcome our students back, educators are encouraged to think about their classroom environment, and what they are doing intentionally to create a safe learning environment where our students trust us and can calm their mind and body in order to learn. We look forward to sharing our learning with you!

This year is the 41st Anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope and ALC is proud to be continuing the legacy of one of our greatest heroes. More information about making donations will come next week! Together, we can all make a difference! #terryfoxschoolruns @terryfoxfoundation

ORANGE SHIRT DAY- Each year, ALC students participate in Orange Shirt Day. Orange Shirt Day is a national movement to recognize the experience of survivors of Indian residential schools, honour them, and show a collective commitment to ensure that every child matters. The initiative calls for every Canadian to wear an orange shirt on September 30 in the spirit of healing and reconciliation. We encourage all of our ALC students to wear an orange shirt to support this important movement. If you would like to order an orange shirt, there are several Indigenous owned companies that are currently selling shirts.

In 2018, the Ontario Legislature passed legislation designating the last Wednesday of each September as Rowan’s Law Day. The day is dedicated to promoting awareness of strategies to prevent, identify, and manage concussions. Rowan Stringer was an OCDSB student. The OCDSB is committed to honouring her memory by ensuring that students in the District have an opportunity to learn about concussions so that they can keep themselves and others safe.

IMMUNIZATIONS: Just a reminder that OPH will be at ALC on Sept 15 to give Immunizations to students in Grades 7 and 8. Please note that if your child has recently received their COVID-19 vaccine, it might impact their ability to receive other immunizations. Please check with OPH if you are unsure. IMMUNIZATIONS QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

ELECTRONIC FORMS: All families are asked to complete the following electronic forms for their child. These forms must be completed before students will be able to access technology at school.
