As we head into the long weekend, we want to take this opportunity to thank all of our families here at ALC. We are grateful for our amazing school community and are privileged to be able to work with your children each day. We cannot tell you how much your patience and flexibility has meant to us as we started up the new year. The team work and support you offer makes the learning journey for us all that much more powerful!

We hope everyone has a restful long weekend!

SCHOOL COUNCIL CLOTHING DRIVE: We are looking at collecting some much needed Winter Gear for students and families at Carleton Heights. They do not need winter jackets, snow suits, snow pants or boots. What they do need, for the primary division (Kinder to Grade 3, 4 year olds to 8 year olds) is the following:

Winter Hats

NEW underwear

Track pants (no zippers or enclosures)

Thick socks.

Indoor shoes

If you would like to donate any of the above items please send them to the school with your child from October 12th to the 15th.  There will be a box in the rotunda for collection. Please only send what is listed above and ensure it is in good condition. Thank you!

On Monday, our students in Grade 6-8 (with some Grade 5s in the combined classes) participated in Anti-Racism workshops through Get REAL. These workshops focused on building compassion, dispelling stereotypes, and showing that we all have challenges, we can all be kind, and we're a lot more alike than we are different. Students had opportunities to ask questions, and the questions asked were thought-provoking and reflected student understanding of this important work!

The Grade 5/6 MFI class is organizing the ALC Annual Fall Food Drive. We are collecting donations from Oct. 12-Oct. 29. Check out the Stittsville Food Bank website for a link to donate online if you prefer. Thanks so much for supporting our community.  https://www.stittsvillefoodbank.ca/

Labelled collection boxes will be found in the hallways around your classes. Please send donations in a separate bag for students to drop into the collection bins as they enter the building in the morning.

Yearbooks for the 2020-2021 school year have been distributed to all ALC students. If you wish to purchase one of the few extras, please email our parent yearbook volunteer at yearbookalc@gmail.com

If you are interested in joining us for our October School COuncil Meeting, please send an email to this email address sc-alornecassidyes@ocdsb.ca and you will receive a link to the Virtual Meeting the morning of the meeting.

This is a reminder that once again this year, we will be outside rain or shine. Our students will spend all day in one classroom at their desk, so when we get a chance to be outdoors we will take full advantage. This also provides our custodial team with the opportunity to sanitize desk tops and washrooms when the spaces are free of students and teachers.

We strongly encourage our Ducks to dress for the weather, as they will be outdoors for two recesses as well as a 40 minute physical education class. On a rainy day,

students are welcome to wear rain boots, bring an umbrella and their running shoes in their backpack as long as they can independently put on their shoes. They will remove their boots in their classroom, at their desks. Unfortunately, cubbies and lockers will not be in use for students in grades 1 to 8.. We will be revisiting this as the weather continues to change.

STUDENT SAFETY-As student safety is our top priority, this week we took advantage of the nice weather to complete our first three mandatory fire drill practices for the fall term. This year, the procedures for drills sound and look much different than they have in the past. Students were introduced to the sound of the alarm and then we practiced in small groups to ensure that our social distancing protocols were maintained.

THE THIRD PATH- CONDITION #2: - This month our staff is focusing on the second condition in the book Third Path, Regulation.  Regulation is how children deal with stress when they are presented with a problem. This graphic shows how children may deal with stressful situations that stop them from learning.

We have received an updated hard copy of the Daily Screening Tool for Students. Please use this updated tool if the website version is not working! School-Childcare-Screening-Tool-Hard-Copy_EN.pdf
