Monday Morning Minutes September 14th, 2020
Posted on 09/14/2020

Dear ALC Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the official first week of the 2020-21 school year.  This year is shaping up to be like no other to date, with a variety of new protocols and procedures being put in place to help ensure the health and safety of our students and staff as we navigate the COVID-19 pandemic.

Unfortunately, the school day will not be business as usual.  Some of the biggest changes include: staggered dismissal times of 3:30 and 3:45 pm, the fact that students will remain in their homerooms all day and teachers will move rooms, student desks are all separated and placed in rows and carpet areas have been removed from Gr 1-8 classrooms.  Clubs and teams are on hold, as are class visits to the library.  Staff will be wearing masks and face shields throughout the day.

Families will be required to complete the COVID-19 self-assessment found here https://secureforms.ottawapublichealth.ca/School-Health-Sante-scolaire/COVID-19-Screening-Tool-for-Students
every morning to determine if their children can attend school that day. All phys ed classes will be held outside in all weather and with modified activities and each homeroom will have a zone of the playground to use at recess.  From the parent perspective, the most significant change is that access to the school and yard is limited to ALC staff and students only.  All of these changes have been made with the health and safety of your children in mind and we thank you in advance for following the new procedures.

We are also asking for your help in preparing your child(ren) for the many changes to their previous experience at school.  As your children adjust to the new protocols and routines, please remind them that the changes are being made to keep us all safe.  To help you with that conversation, we have prepared a special ALC slideshow for your family to review what some of those changes look like.  Please go to the school website alornecassidyes.ocdsb.ca after 9:30 am today to access the slideshow.

ALC Staffing Update

We would like to welcome several new faces to the ALC staff including:

- Mme Lesley McMullen who will be starting the school year as the Kinder B Green homeroom teacher;

- Mr Mark Welsh, who will be starting the year as the Kinder C Pink French and Primary Core French teacher;

- Mrs. Bonnie Scheel (Kinder A Blue PM RECE) and Mrs Ariel Wehrmann (Kinder C Pink PM RECE); and

- Mrs Katie Swanek who will be teaching Math to EFI1B and then teaching the rest of the day with the Remote School.

Two of our Early Childhood Educators are on leave this year:  Mrs Jing Zhao and Ms. Shalu Mehta, as is Mrs. Otchere, to whom we would like to extend our congratulations and best wishes on the very recent birth of her baby boy.

Morning Drop off and After School Pick up

We are anticipating a significant increase in traffic around the school this fall as many families will be driving their children to and from ALC. To help support safer school zones and make everyone’s trip to and from school a success, we are asking all ALC families who plan to drive to and/or from school this fall to please park 5 to 10 minutes away from the school and walk the rest of the way.  OSTA has created multiple resources and tools, like walking route maps, for parents and children to download and use and can be found here:

http://www.ottawaschoolbus.ca/helpful-resources/walking-route-walk-zone-maps-by-school/

Walk-a-Block maps are designed to encourage parents who drive their children to school, to park 5 to 10 minutes away from the school and walk the rest of the way. The maps identify 400 and 800 metre radiuses around the school. They also identify neighbourhood street names, pathways and potential quiet places to park.

Student access to ALC in the morning is as follows
:

Grade 1-3 walker/drivers - are to enter the back field through the break in the wooden fence to the north of the skating hut

Grade 4-8 walker/drivers - are to enter the back field at the far north end by the back basketball court

Kindergarten students must be handed over directly to the staff member on duty at the Kindergarten gate near the Crossingbridge park sign.

Bus students will disembark at the bus loop upon arrival and make their way directly to their class lineup area.  Staff will bring Kinder bus students into the gated Kinder yard.

morning only Kiss and Ride is also available at the front of the building to those Gr 1-8 students who arrive with enough time to then walk from the front of the building around to the back field area by 9:15 am.

Please see the attached ALC Parent Handbook for details on late arrival and early pick up procedures:

ALC parent handbook Sept 2020 (2).pdf

As part of our COVID-19 safety protocols, parents will not be permitted to enter the school or the back field area and must remain behind the fence or on the path by Crossingbridge park.

Afternoon Dismissal and Pick up

Due to the large number of families who are planning on driving instead of using the bus, and to help ensure social distancing protocols, we will be staggering student dismissal at the end of the day into two groups:

At 3:30 pm daily, all Kinder walkers will be released to their parents at the Kindergarten gate and Gr 1-8 walkers/drivers with last names A through N will be released at their back field entrance/exit area.

At 3:45 daily, all remaining students including Kinder through Grade 8 students in EDP and taking the bus, as well as Grade 1-8 walkers/drivers with last names O through Z will be released at their back field entrance/exit area.

**Parents will not be permitted to enter the school or the back field area at dismissal time and must remain behind the fence or on the path by Crossing Bridge park.

Families in the 3:30 dismissal time are asked to vacate the path area behind the wooden fence on Hobin as quickly as possible in order to make room for the 3:45 group. NO students will exit through the front doors of the building at the end of the day.  The map detailing the exact locations for student drop off and pick up will be sent out either later today or early Tuesday.

Class placement emails coming today

And finally, as per past practice, families will receive an email later this morning indicating their Grade 1 - 8 child’s division and homeroom teacher name prior to their first day of school.  We will also be including details about where the child is to meet their teacher.  Teachers will then be reaching out directly to families later today and Tuesday.

The revised ALC Parent Handbook will also be sent out to all ALC families later today or tomorrow.  Our apologies but we were having difficulties adding both the yard map for student access and the handbook to today's MMM so they will be sent in a separate email.

We are very much looking forward to having all of our ALC ducks back in the pond with us later this week!
