Dear ALC Parents and Guardians,

2020 School Year Update

As was shared by our Director, Camille Williams-Taylor, in her August 27th email to families, there will be a change to the start of the school year; students will now start school between September 8th and September 18th.  Details of the progressive start dates are expected early this week.  The delay to the start of the school year has also resulted in us pushing back our Welcome to Kindergarten ALC Virtual Intake meetings.  Originally scheduled for September 3 and 4, new dates will be determined once we receive our school’s progressive start dates.  We thank all ALC families for your patience and support as we confirm school enrolment, assign students to classes, finalize schedules, determine class sizes and the number of staff per school.  We look forward to sharing our revised school organization with all ALC families very soon.

COVID-19 Screening Tool for Students

Ottawa Public Health has developed an online COVID-19 Screening Tool for Students. This tool will help parents and guardians make decisions about whether or not their child/children can attend school (In Person) and should be completed daily before attending school. Please note that no personal information is requested when completing the assessment. More details are available on the Ottawa Public Health website

Busing Update

OSTA has advised that transportation services will be delayed until September 14, 2020, to allow sufficient time for re-routing. More information will be available on the OSTA website.

ALC School Office Update

We are pleased to welcome Mrs. Tina Walker to the ALC office team.  Mrs. Walker will be working full days with Mrs. Norton this fall while we loan out Mrs. Jones to Goulbourn Middle School for a few months.  Both Mrs. Norton and Mrs. Walker are happy to help new and returning ALC parents from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. this week, either by phone at 613-831-3434 or by appointment for registration-related matters.  Once school is back in session, the ALC office hours will return to 8:30 am - 4:30 pm.

Important Info for Parents of New Students Registered for September

In order to complete your child's registration, parents of students who are new to ALC this September will need to provide proof of age and proof of address documents.  (If you have already done so, your child's registration is complete.) As parents will have limited access to the school, there will be a new interim process to validate proof of age and address for those families who registered throughout the summer.  A Google Form will be sent to these parents which they will use to submit their documents.  If you registered your child for September and did not receive the email with a Google Form from Admissions, please contact Mrs. Norton in the school office to make arrangements to provide these documents to her either by email or fax.  Mrs. Norton may be contacted by email: wendy.norton@ocdsb.ca or by phone: 613-831-3434.  The school fax number is 613-831-3997

ALC Student Tech Needs and Chromebook Return

If your child is participating in Remote Learning in September, and you require a chromebook and or hotspot, please email Sandra Hutt at sandra.hutt@ocdsb.ca to make arrangements for a device.

If your family borrowed a device during the Learn from Home period last spring and your child is returning for In-Person Learning at ALC, the borrowed technology can be dropped off at the school tomorrow, Tuesday, September 1st, between 9 and 9:30 am. An ALC staff member will be waiting at the front doors of the school to collect devices. Simply place the borrowed device, power cord and adapter in a clear bag marked with your child’s name into your car’s trunk and once you arrive at ALC, pull up to the front of the school and pop your trunk; we will then retrieve the device from your vehicle for a contactless drop-off.  Alternatively, students who borrowed devices and are returning to In-Person Learning may bring the devices back to school along with power cords and adapters in a clear plastic bag labeled with their name on their first day of school. If you are new to ALC and borrowed a chromebook from your previous OCDSB school, please send it in with your child and we will make sure it gets back to the appropriate school.  If there are any performance issues or any physical problems with the devices please leave a note with details of the issues in the bag with the device.

Families who borrowed tech in the spring and are opting for Remote Learning may continue to borrow the device if required.

Lost and Found - Two Bicycles

Over the summer, two bicycles were found just outside of the school.  If you have lost a bike or two in the past few weeks, please contact Elizabeth at elizabeth.rainer@ocdsb.ca with a description of your bikes.  We would love to see them returned to their rightful owners.

Kind regards,
