Welcome Back Students and Staff

Dear ALC Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to our first Monday Morning Message (MMM) of the 2020-2021 school year!  As September quickly approaches, we would like to wish a warm welcome to all of the new families who are joining our school community.   A Lorne Cassidy (ALC) is a wonderful school, with terrific students, a fantastic parent community, and dedicated OCDSB staff and we are happy to have you become a part of our school community.

As we prepare for the return to school during these most unusual times, we would like to thank all ALC families for their patience and support as we try to safely navigate COVID-19. We know that you have many questions and we want to acknowledge the anxiety and feelings of uncertainty that many families are facing.  Rest assured, the safety of ALC students and staff is our first priority.  Our school staff are caring educators with an incredible commitment to student learning and well-being; your children will be in good hands.

What will school look like in September?

The safety of students and staff is our first priority. When your child returns to ALC this September there will be a number of new safety measures in place, including hand hygiene, physical distancing, personal protective equipment and more.  Some examples include:

  • Before coming to school, all students and staff must complete a COVID-19 self-assessment;
  • Access to school buildings will be restricted to staff and students;
  • Physical distancing and directional signage will be in place in the building;
  • Upon entry at the school and into each classroom and at lunch and recess, hand washing/sanitizing will be required
  • All ALC students in grades 4-8 are required to wear masks indoors; younger students will be encouraged to wear masks indoors;
  • Students will have designated desks;
  • Kinder tables will be equipped with partitions and Grade 1 to 3 student desks will be equipped with desk shields;
  • Play structures are closed for the beginning of the school year;
  • Phys Ed will be outdoors;
  • Recess times will be staggered to allow for greater social distancing on the yard.

We are currently adding details about the COVID-19 related safety measures we are putting in place at ALC to our ALC 2020-21 School Opening document for families that will be shared in an upcoming email.  The document will include photos and videos of typical classrooms as well as entry/exit procedures and pick up and drop off procedures.

We can confirm that there will be a staggered start to the school year.  Details of which grades will start on each day will be sent out shortly.  As has been our practice in the past few years, families will receive an email the day before their child starts school with their child’s Division and Homeroom teacher name.

Masks will be mandatory at school for Grade 4 through 8 students.  In preparation for the upcoming school year, we would ask that you please have your Grade 4 to 8 child(ren) practice wearing their mask for an hour or more at a time.

Meanwhile, if you have not yet had a chance to do so, we recommend that you view the following video where our Associate Director, Brett Reynolds, details some of the safety measures the OCDSB is putting in place in schools this fall. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_TY9qKNYVs

The Board has also produced a similar video in Arabic that may be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHSfrAnOHH4

To assist families with the return to school, CHEO has put together a document that may be of interest. Entitled Back to School During COVID-19: Tips for Parents and Caregivers, this resource includes tips that may be helpful as the school year starts, whether or not your child will be returning to school physically or virtually.  https://www.cheo.on.ca/en/resources-and-support/resources/P6225E.pdf

Welcome to Kindergarten, Intake Interviews and School Tours

Parents of all Year 1 students (those who have previously been referred to as Junior Kindergarten students) will be receiving an email from the school inviting parents of new Kinder students to join Kindergarten staff for a virtual Intake Interview on either September 3rd or 4th.  Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we are unable to offer any in-person tours of the building to new students/families prior to the start of the school year.  We are however putting together a detailed document that will be shared with ALC families prior to the first day of school that will include photos and videos of typical classrooms as well as entry/exit procedures and pick up and drop off.

School Office Open

The school office has now reopened for the school year.  Mrs. Norton and Mrs. Walker are happy to help new and returning ALC parents from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. this week and next, either by phone at 613-831-3434 or by appointment for registration-related matters.  Come September 3rd once school is back in session, the ALC office hours will return to 8:30 am - 4:30 pm.

Important Info for Parents of New Students Registered for September

In order to complete your child's registration, parents of students who are new to ALC this September will need to provide proof of age and proof of address documents.  (If you have already done so, your child's registration is complete.) As parents will have limited access to the school, there will be a new interim process to validate proof of age and address for those families who registered throughout the summer.  A Google Form will be sent to these parents which they will use to submit their documents.  If you registered your child for September and did not receive the email with a Google Form from Admissions, please contact Mrs. Norton in the school office to make arrangements to provide these documents to her either by email or fax.  Mrs. Norton may be contacted by email: wendy.norton@ocdsb.ca or by phone: 613-831-3434.  The school fax number is 613-831-3997.

ALC Student Tech Needs and Chromebook Return

If your child is participating in Remote Learning in September, and you require a chromebook and or hotspot, please email Sandra Hutt at sandra.hutt@ocdsb.ca to make arrangements for a device.

If your family borrowed a device during the Learn from Home period last spring and your child is returning for In-Person Learning at ALC, the borrowed technology can be dropped off at the school on Tuesday, September 1st between 9 and 9:30 am. An ALC staff member will be waiting at the front doors of the school to collect devices. Simply place the borrowed device, power cord and adapter in a clear bag marked with your child’s name into your car’s trunk and once you arrive at ALC, pull up to the front of the school and pop your trunk; we will then retrieve the device from your vehicle for a contactless drop-off.  Alternatively, students who borrowed devices and are returning to In-Person Learning may bring the devices back to school along with power cords and adapters in a clear plastic bag labeled with their name on their first day of school. If you are new to ALC and borrowed a chromebook from your previous OCDSB school, please send it in with your child and we will make sure it gets back to the appropriate school.  If there are any performance issues or any physical problems with the devices please leave a note with details of the issues in the bag with the device.

Families who borrowed tech in the spring and are opting for Remote Learning may continue to borrow the device if required.

Here’s to wishing you a wonderful last few days of summer vacation and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to school soon!

Kind regards,
