Social Studies - Flag Project

 

We have begun to work on our first unit in social studies. It is Aspects of Canadian Government. When I asked the class what they thought about when they heard the word government, they gave me the following words: taxes, Parliament Hill, votes (Oct 10), Senate, court, money, Canada, Prime Minister, laws, homeless people, Parliament buildings, health, soldiers, bills, Canadian flag, judges, war, world, John Cabot, dead people, changing of the guard, community, and Peace Tower. Quite an interesting list.

We are making a class flag. These pictures will document our progress. Each student has traced and cut out their hands.

On the left hand they are answering the question, Who am I? On the right had they are answering the question, What is Canada? These hands will make up the red bars on either side of the maple leaf.

On the leaf I am hoping to have a small picture of each student. It already looks great.
